Installed and tested CamStudio 2.6b r294 on Windows 8 Release Preview, the following error is reported:

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace tool for more detail.

Solution:
Download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86): http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5582
